The Great Indian rebellion – সঙ্গঠিত হয় ১৮৫৭ সালে। তীতুমীরের ওয়াহাবী বাশেরকেল্লার বিদ্রোহের সময়কাল ১৮৩০ পরবর্তী । অনেক আলোচিত নীল বিদ্রোহ গুলোও সঙ্গঠিত হয় উনিবিংশ শতাব্দীর প্রথম থেকে মধ্যভাগে । কিন্তু সিপাহী বিদ্রোহের প্রায় আশি বছর আগে ব্যাপক বিদ্রোহের আগুন জ্বলে ওঠে পুর্ব বাংলার রংপুর ও আশে পাশের অঞ্চলে। এই বিদ্রোহের নায়ক কৃষক নুরালদীন পুর্ব বাংলার অন্যতম প্রথম জাতীয়তাবাদী। বাংলার বাংলা বিহার উড়িষ্যার শেষ নবাব সিরাজউদ্দৌলাকে ১৭৫৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পলাশির যুদ্ধে মির্জাফরের বিশ্বাস ঘাতকতায় পরাজিত করে বাংলায় ইংরেজ শাসনের সূচনা হয়। ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানীর গর্ভনর ওয়ারেন হেষ্টিংস দেবী সিং নামক এক অত্যাচারী লোভী ব্যক্তিকে রংপুর অঞ্চলের ইজারাদার নিয়োগ করেন। দেবী সিং ইজারা পাওয়ার পর বেশি রাজস্ব আদায়ের জন্য প্রজাদের উপর চূড়ান্ত অত্যাচার করেন। অতিরিক্ত কর প্রদানে ব্যর্থ হয়ে দেবী চৌধারাণী সহ বহু জমিদার তাদের সম্পদ ও জমিদারী হারান। আর কৃষকরা নিঃস্ব হয়ে পড়েন। খাজনা দিতে না পারায় দলে দলে কৃষকদের জেলে পাঠানো হয়। সহায়- সম্পত্তি বাজেয়াপ্ত করা হয়। কৃষকদের ধরে এনে পিঠে চাবুকের কষাঘাত করা হয় ও কুড়ে ঘর আগুনে পুড়ে ছাই করা হয়। এ সময় অনেকে মহাজনের দ্বারস্থ হয়। অনেকে বনে জঙ্গলে পালিয়ে যায়। নারীদের উপর সীমাহীন অত্যাচার চালানো হয় এবং অনেককে জেলে পাঠানো হয়। কৃষককুল তাদের লাঙ্গল, বলদ, বাড়ি- ঘর সবই হারায়। এই নির্মম ও পাশবিক অত্যাচারের হাত থেকে পরিত্রাণের জন্য ১৭৮২ খ্রিষ্টান্দে রংপুর অঞ্চলে বিদ্রোহের আগুন ধুমায়িত হয়ে উঠে। কৃষকরা প্রথমে দেবী সিংহের অত্যাচার বন্ধ ও অন্যান্য দাবী পুরণের জন্য রংপুর কালেক্টরেট গুড ল্যান্ডের নিকট দাবী জানায়। গুড ল্যান্ড দাবী না মানায় এ অঞ্চলের নীপিড়িত মানুষ নুরালদীন নামক এক সংগ্রামী ও সাহসী কৃষককে নবাব হিসেবে ঘোষনা দিয়ে খাজনা দেবে না এমনকি ইংরেজ শাসন মানবে না মর্মে ঘোষণা দেয়। কৃষকের নবাব নুরালদীন এক ফর্মান জারী করে দেবী সিংকে খাজনা দিতে বারণ করেন। ১৭৮৩ সালের রংপুরের এই কৃষক বিদ্রোহ পার্শ্ববর্তী দিনাজপুর, ঠাকুরগাঁও, নীলফামারী, গাইবান্ধা, লালমনিরহাট, কুড়িগ্রাম সহ সমগ্র এলাকায় দাবানলের মত ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। বিদ্রোহীদের হাতে ডিমলার জমিদার মারা যান। দেবী সিং ও গুড ল্যান্ড সেনাপতি ম্যাকডোল্যান্ড এর নেতৃত্বে এক দল সৈন্য রংপুরের কৃষক বিদ্রোহ দমন করার জন্য প্রেরণ করেন। এই বাহিনী পথে পথে বিদ্রোহীদের বাঁধার সম্মুখিন হন এবং রক্তিক্ষয়ী যুদ্ধে লিপ্ত হয়ে গ্রামের পর গ্রাম পুড়িয়ে ছাই করে দেন। নুরালদীনের বাহিনী ইংরেজ সৈন্যদের ঘাটি মোগলহাট আক্রমণ করে। এ যুদ্ধে অদম্য সাহসী কৃষকের নবাব নুরালদীন আহত অবস্থায় বন্দী হন এবং ইংরেজরা তাকে নির্মমভাবে হত্যা করে। এর পর দেবী চৌধারাণী, ভবানী পাঠক, কৃপানাথ, অনুক নারায়ন, শিব চন্দ্র রায়, চ্যারাগ আলী, শ্রী নিবাস প্রমূখ বিদ্রোহে নেতৃত্ব দেন। ভবানী পাঠক ও দেবী চৌধারানী পায়রাডাঙ্গা মঠ ও মন্দির স্থাপন করে সন্ন্যাসী বেশে আশ্রয় নিয়ে দিনের বেলা পূজা আর্চনা করত আর রাতের আধারে বেনিয়া ইংরেজদের উপর আক্রমণ চালাতো। এই মঠ মন্দিরে সন্ন্যাসীগণ ছিলেন বৈদান্তিক হিন্দু যোগী। এই সন্ন্যাসীগণ ত্রিশূল ব্যবহার করতেন। একটি সূত্র মতে বিদ্রোহীরা হিন্দু-মুসলমান ধর্মের মধ্যে ইংরেজ হটাও মন্ত্রে এক অপূর্ব সেতুবন্ধন রচনা করেন ও তাদের আচরণগত তার দৃশ্যমান ছিল। এই বাহিনীর যোদ্ধারা ছিলেন মোগল সম্রাজ্যের বেকার সৈন্য ও বাংলার ভূমিহীন নিপীড়িত কৃষক। নুরালদীন রা পরাক্রমশালী ব্রিটিশ ওয়ার মেশীনের সামনে বেশীদিন টিকতে পারে নি সত্য। কিন্ত নুরালদীন যে জাতীয়তাবাদের বীজ বপন করে দিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন এই বাংলার বুকে – তাই ধীরে ধীরে সাওতাল বিদ্রোহ, নীল বিদ্রোহ ইত্যাদি হয়ে সর্ব ভারতীয় সিইপাহী বিদ্রোহে রুপ নিয়েছিল একশো বছরের ও কম সময়ের মধ্যে।
